Changing Your Life

Evolution has firewalled the mind's internal model, the one we want to change, to protect learned values, morals, family character, all the things that contribute to a successful society. But that process doesn't always serve well, and it struggles with the huge and rapid sophistication of society over the last fifty years. Changing it is often appropriate, and there are ways around the firewall.

There are two recognised techniques. The first is 'neuro-linguistic-programming' (NLP), the second is 'cognitive behavioural therapy' (CBT). I use both, and my own methods, but mix'n'match, rather than apply any formulaic method. (Hypnosis is a third technique, but unlike these two, there's less control and less link with reality in the process, which I believe makes it a little dangerous).

NLP is fun, it's wacky, it seems improbable, but it works superbly well if you've got a good imagination and are prepared to let go a bit. It harnesses the power of visualisation, the basis from which we evolved into a sentient species. CBT is altogether more serious, a logical analysis of your current model and it's faults, and the painstaking correction of errors. It's steady, but for anyone who can't take NLP seriously, it is another effective way in.
